Malta Stock Exchange plc provides a structure for admission of financial instruments to its recognized lists that may subsequently be traded on a regulated, transparent, and orderly secondary market place. It also offers a range of back-office services, including maintenance of share and bond registers, clearing and settlement, custody, depository, and other security related services. The company was founded in 1990 and is based in Valletta, Malta. Malta Stock Exchange plc is a subsidiary of MSE (Holdings) Limited.
The TRX replaced the MSE Equity Index, which is solely a price index, with the MSE Equity Total Return Index (MSETRX), which takes into consideration price fluctuations of the component shares and reflects the dividends these companies pay. It will be assumed that all dividends are reinvested back into the index components. A total return index represents far better the true potential economic benefit of equity investments being they also reflect dividends paid and the potential benefits of compounding.
Both indices calculated by the Malta Stock Exchange (MSE), the MSE Equity Price Index and the MSE Total Return Index, are weighted by the market capitalisation of each of the various constituents of the indices, namely all the companies whose equities are listed on the regulated main market. The performances of both benchmark indices are monitored continuously to gauge movements across the local equity market from one period to another and also to compare the equity market to other asset classes such as bonds, property, etc. Moreover, the indices are also monitored regularly by institutional investors who compare the performance of their collective investment schemes and other client portfolios to the overall equity market.
