MSCI, the world’s premier provider of international indices, launched this series of China-focused indices to include China-based companies whose shares are not listed in China and are not yet in any MSCI China indices, including firms such as Baidu (China’s Google). The MSCI Overseas China Indices are designed to capture the investable universe of Chinese securities outside Greater China, covering Chinese securities listed on the NYSE Euronext – New York, Nasdaq, New York AMEX and the Singapore Exchange. MSCI Overseas China Indices are a departure from MSCI’s approach to China up to now, where the company’s existing indices focused on securities listed on exchanges in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Shenzhen, and excluded those listed in New York or Singapore. The indices employ similar size and liquidity requirements to the MSCI China Indices that are constructed under the MSCI Global Investable Market Indexes (GIMI) methodology. In addition, the MSCI Overseas China Indexes exclude companies formed through reverse merger and on the SGX Watch List. The MSCI Overseas China Indexes are reconstituted annually and reviewed on a quarterly basis for size migration. At each quarterly rebalancing, buffer rules are applied to help maintain index stability and minimize turnover.
