The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, or IBGE, is the agency responsible for official collection of statistical, geographic, cartographic, geodetic and environmental information in Brazil. IBGE performs a decennial national census; questionnaires account for information such as age, household income, literacy, education, occupation and hygiene levels. IBGE is a public institute created in 1936 under the name National Institute of Statistics.

The consumer price index (CPI) is the instrument used to measure inflation. It allows the estimation of the average variation between two given periods in the prices of products consumed by households. It is based on the observation of a fixed basket of goods updated every year. Each product has a weight in the overall index that is proportional to its weight in household expenditure.
